There is a class of profound workplace injuries that doctors call compression injuries, but every day people call crushing injuries.
Crushing injuries can happen almost anywhere, including car accidents and serious assaults, but they occur most often in the workplace, especially in materials handling work such as warehousing.
Examples of workplace crushings:
- Collapse of a structure, platform, or scaffold
- Collapsing shelves
- A skid of merchandise falls from a height
- Being struck by a forklift, car, truck or another vehicle
- Falling from a significant height
- Being crushed by a press or other factory machine
- Being caught between two heavy objects, such as a parked car and a wall, or a boat and a dock.
Crush injuries are often fatal, or they can be partial, with a hand crushed in a press. A generation ago, doctors had few answers for a surviving crush victim. If it were a hand that was crushed, that hand would no longer function.
